Niezwykle rzadko podnosi głos, zazwyczaj mówi niemal szeptem. Dla swych poddanych jest surowym panem. Brutalnie egzekwuje wszystkie przysługujące mu prawa, dba jednak, by wieści o nadużyciach nie rozniosły się na Północy. Jego dewiza brzmi „spokojny kraj, cisi ludzie”[i]. Jest przebiegły i okrutny.
Przedakcja
Boltonowie zachowali – oficjalnie zniesione – prawo pierwszej nocy. Pewnego razu Roose pojechał na polowanie i spotkał młodą, ładną kobietę. Gdy się dowiedział, że jest żoną młynarza znad Płaczącej Wody i małżeństwo zostało zawarte potajemnie, rozgniewał się. Kazał powiesić młynarza, a kobietę zgwałcił. Wskutek tego aktu urodził się Ramsay. Roose utrzymywał syna i jego matkę, ale zażądał, by chłopiec nigdy nie dowiedział się o swym pochodzeniu.
Podczas rebelii Roberta Roose Bolton walczył po stronie buntowników, podobnie jak jego senior, Eddard Stark. Wziął udział m.in. w bitwie nad Tridentem. Gdy pojmano ciężko rannego ser Barristana Selmy’ego, Roose radził, by go dobić, ale Robert Baratheon postanowił oszczędzić jeńca.
Lord Bolton był dwukrotnie żonaty. Imię pierwszej żony nie jest znane. Drugą żoną Roose’a została Bethany Ryswell, starsza siostra Barbrey Dustin. W tym celu zawarł układ z Vargo Hoatem, dowódcą Dzielnych Kompanionów. Byli to najemnicy w służbie Tywina Lannistera, zwani też Krwawymi Komediantami z powodu okrucieństwa i nikczemności. Kompanioni weszli do Harrenhal pod pozorem, że przyprowadzili jeńców. Krwawi Komedianci mieli w nocy pozabijać zbrojnych Amory’ego Lorcha, dowodzącego obroną zamku. Arya Stark, która ukrywała się w Harrenhal i udawała zwykłą służącą, z pomocą Jaqena H’ghara uwolniła jeńców i w ten sposób nieświadomie pomogła Kompanionom. Jeden z nich przyprowadził ją do Boltona, gdy ten pojawił się na zamku. Lord nie rozpoznał Starkówny i wziął ją za dziecko z ludu. Została jego podczaszym.
Roose rozkazał Krwawym Komediantom oczyścić okolicę ze stronników Lannisterów. Gdy dotarły do niego wieści o przegranej Stannisa na Czarnym Nurcie i o zdobyciu Winterfell przez Theona Greyjoya, naradził się z Freyami. Uważali oni, że Robb Stark powinien zawrzeć pokój z Lannisterami. Lord Bolton powiedział, że to rozważy. Rozkazał Helmanowi Tallhartowi wymordować jeńców, spalić zamek Darrych, połączyć siły z Robettem Gloverem i pomaszerować wraz z nim na Duskendale. Po wydaniu rozkazów Roose pojechał zapolować na wilki. Po powrocie powiedział Aryi, że zostawi zamek Dzielnym Kompanionom.
Nawałnica mieczy
Kiedy Dzielni Kompanioni przyprowadzili do zamku Jaimego Lannistera i Brienne z Tarthu lord Bolton wciąż przebywał w Harrenhal.. Kazał zapewnić jeńcom wszelkie wygody i opatrzyć Jaimego, któremu Komedianci odcięli prawą rękę. Potem zaprosił pojmanych na kolację. Poinformował ich o najnowszych wydarzeniach i wytłumaczył im postępowanie Hoata. Zgodził się odesłać Lannistera do Królewskiej Przystani pod warunkiem, że Królobójca nie obciąży go winą za stratę ręki, rozkazał jednak zatrzymać Brienne w Harrenhal. Gdy Roose wyjeżdżał z zamku, poprosił, by Jaime przekazał pozdrowienia lordowi Tywinowi, a sam obiecał, że pozdrowi Robba od Królobójcy.
Podczas przeprawy przez Trident Bolton pozwolił, by Góra zaatakował jego straż tylną, dowodzoną przez Wylisa Manderly’ego. Następnie pozostawił część wojsk, by strzegła rzeki. Przyprowadził do Bliźniaków tylko zbrojnych z Dreadfort i Karholdu. Tych ostatnich rzekomo zabrał dlatego, że po ścięciu Rickarda Karstarka przez Robba ich lojalność stała się wątpliwa i należało na nich uważać. Roose powiedział też królowi, że Glover ruszył na Duskendale z własnej inicjatywy.
Podczas wesela Edmure’a Tully’ego lord Bolton siedział obok Catelyn Stark. Jadł i pił bardzo powściągliwie. Jeszcze przed pokładzinami wyszedł z sali pod pretekstem, że musi ulżyć pęcherzowi. Wrócił na czele żołnierzy, ubrany w kolczugę i uzbrojony. Wkoło trwała już masakra ludzi Robba. Roose wbił miecz w serce rannego króla Północy. Powiedział przy tym, że Jaime Lannister przesyła pozdrowienia. W tym samym czasie na zewnątrz toczyła się bitwa. Freyowie i zbrojni Boltona zaatakowali oddziały wierne Starkom. Później wyszło na jaw, że to Roose Bolton i Lothar Frey opracowali wszystkie szczegóły masakry, nazywanej Krwawymi Godami.
Tywin Lannister wynagrodził ród Boltonów. Roose otrzymał tytuł namiestnika Północy, a jego bękarci syn został zalegitymizowany.
Taniec ze smokami
Roose wrócił na Północ na czele swojej armii oraz dwóch tysięcy zbrojnych z Bliźniaków pod komendą Aenysa i Hosteena Freyów. Towarzyszyła mu żona Walda oraz narzeczona Ramsaya, „Arya Stark” (w rzeczywistości Jeyne Poole). Lord Bolton zamieszkał w Barrow Hall, zamku lady Dustin, i zajął się planowaniem dalszych działań. Mógł liczyć przede wszystkim na Ryswellów i Dustinów, z którymi był spowinowacony, oraz na Arnulfa Karstarka, który wprawdzie jawnie wspierał Stannisa, ale w rzeczywistości szpiegował dla Boltonów i tylko czekał na znak, by przejść na ich stronę. Inni lordowie popierali Boltonów ze względu na zakładników albo dlatego, że nie widzieli innego wyjścia. Roose im nie ufał.
Lord Bolton nie był zadowolony ze swego syna. Uważał, że Ramsay zraża do siebie północną szlachtę, i zalecał mu większą dyskrecję. Zabrał mu też Theona, który jako wychowanek Eddarda Starka miał potwierdzić tożsamość „Aryi”. Roose opowiedział młodemu Greyjoyowi o przeszłości Ramsaya i o swoich przewidywaniach dotyczących przyszłości rodu Boltonów. Lord Dreadfort stwierdził, że nawet jeśli Walda urodzi mu synów, on nie zdąży ich wychować, a po jego śmierci Ramsay przejmie władzę i pozabija przyrodnich braci. Dodał, że tak będzie najlepiej, bo młodociani dziedzice to zguba każdego rodu.[ii]
Początkowo ślub Ramsaya i „Aryi” miał się odbyć w Barrowton, ale gdy Roose dowiedział się, że Stannis Baratheon odbił Deepwood Motte z rąk żelaznych ludzi, zmienił miejsce ceremonii na Winterfell, by zmusić Stannisa do marszu w tym kierunku. Zamek był zrujnowany, a w ocalałych pomieszczeniach osiedlili się dzicy lokatorzy. Lord Dreadfort kazał im pracować przy odbudowie i obiecał, że okaże łaskę. Miłosierdzie polegało na tym, że po zakończeniu prac kazał wszystkich powiesić, zamiast obedrzeć ich ze skóry. W trakcie wesela syna lord Bolton był bardzo ostrożny. Nie ufał zwłaszcza Wymanowi Manderly’emu i nie jadł żadnej potrawy, której wcześniej nie skosztował lord Białego Portu. Kiedy nadszedł czas pokładzin, Roose wezwał lordów do samotni na naradę wojenną.
Po ślubie Ramsaya Boltonowie pozostali w Winterfell i czekali na Stannisa. Gdy spadł śnieg i twierdza została odcięta od świata, doszło w niej do serii tajemniczych zgonów. Między lordami narastała nieufność. Gdy Mały Walder Frey został zamordowany, jego kuzyn Duży Walder rzucił podejrzenia na kogoś z Białego Portu. Lord Wyman wyparł się wszelkiego związku z morderstwami i w dodatku obraził Freyów, co doprowadziło do krwawej rozprawy między nimi a zbrojnymi Manderlych. Gdy ludzie z Dreadfort opanowali sytuację, Roose Bolton, który właśnie dowiedział się, że armia Stannisa znajduje się trzy dni drogi od Winterfell, wydał Freyom i Manderlym rozkaz wymarszu.
Wichry zimy
Theon przesłuchiwany przez Stannisa zeznał, że Roose Bolton wysłał w pole Freyów i Manderlych oraz część zbrojnych z Dreadfort pod dowództwem Ramsaya, a sam zamierza zostać w Winterfell.
Teorie
Spekulacje czytelników dotyczą planów Roose’a względem Ramsaya. Z jednej strony lord Bolton nie ma innego potomka. Nawet jeśli Walda urodzi syna, minie wiele lat, zanim chłopiec będzie w stanie rządzić na ziemiach ojca. Z drugiej strony wiadomo, że Roose podejrzewa Ramsaya o zamordowanie Domerica i negatywnie ocenia jego talenty polityczne. Z tego powodu wielu fanów uważa, że kiedy Roose będzie miał innego dziedzica – syna Waldy lub jeszcze lepiej syna „Aryi” – zaryzykuje nieletniego spadkobiercę i pozbędzie się Ramsaya.
